Siblings

When a child is seriously ill, siblings are often the forgotten sufferers

Imagine being the sibling of a seriously ill child; not only are you worried about your brother or sister, but it can feel like your needs have take a back seat

Even when parents, extended family and friends do a fantastic job trying to make life as normal as possible in these circumstances, siblings can still suffer – often in silence. When they are unable to express their feelings, children can experience serious anxiety issues that manifest themselves in various ways, such as bed-wetting or difficult behaviour.

Camp Simcha knows the whole family suffers when a child is ill. As well as inviting siblings to all of our outings, parties and retreats we provide a variety of support services specifically for them including:

  • Their own dedicated Big Brother or Sister volunteers can be allocated specifically to siblings. The extra attention that dedicated volunteers bring can go a long way to easing some of those feelings, in some ensuring that every child in the family feels special.
  • Therapeutic arts sessions especially for siblings
  • Sibling After-school club where children get to spend time with others going through similar situations.
  • Counselling can also be arranged for siblings who are struggling to cope emotionally
  • Our FLOs can arrange other bespoke support for siblings where needed.

Leah absolutely loves the art group. It is the highlight of her week when she goes. Our life at home is very busy and this is something just for Leah. She’s also really enjoyed having the chance to make new friends.
